Salahuddin is perhaps best known for his role in the Crusades, particularly for his recapture of Jerusalem from the European Crusaders in 1187.

Salahuddin Ayyubi was born in 1137 in Tikrit, in present-day Iraq.
He belonged to a Kurdish family that served the Muslim rulers of the time.
